  • Game On: How International Sport Events Foster Community Development

International sport reaches across national boundaries to unite people of diverse cultures and countries in shared experiences, promotes certain values and ideals (such as teamwork and fair play), raises the image or identity of many countries, and can even serve as diplomacy or peacebuilding. International events like the Olympics and World Cup, as well as major tennis tournaments such as the Wimbledon, Australian Open, French Open, and US Open, bring together athletes from many nations and regions to compete against each other in a spirit of international solidarity and friendship.

The global reach of sports has been enhanced by advances in transportation, and the development of international governing bodies such as the International Olympic Committee, which oversees the Summer and Winter Olympics; the Federation Internationale de Football Association, which governs football (soccer) globally; and the Union Cycliste Internationale, which governs cycling. In addition, globalization of sports has been helped by the popularity of televised events, which allow fans around the world to follow their favorite teams and players live and in person.

As a result of this growth, the impact of international sports has grown significantly in recent decades. In the past, international sports competition was often a matter of national pride and identity; however, the emergence of globalization has brought new opportunities for cross-cultural interaction and cooperation.

International sporting competition can also have political dimensions that are often overlooked. For example, the International Olympic Committee has the power to ban participants from competing based on their country of origin or if their actions are considered to be racist, discriminatory, or otherwise offensive. This has led to a number of controversial situations in the past.

Furthermore, international sport has often served as a platform for social activism and advocacy for certain issues. For instance, the organization Peace One Day uses football matches as a means to promote peace in conflict zones and the Olympic Truce is a traditional agreement that establishes a temporary ceasefire during the Olympic Games to allow athletes from different countries to compete without fear of violence. This article investigates how hosting an international sport event in a city that has experienced persistent internal social divisions can foster community development outcomes in line with the broader goals of sports for development and peace (SDP). Drawing on qualitative data from interviews with residents, this research finds that a combination of local organizational characteristics, including the degree to which a sporting event is perceived to be managed by an unbiased outside party, can make or break its ability to inspire SDP. In addition, it is important to understand the local context and engage a broad range of residents in the planning and execution of these events in order to maximize their potential for SDP benefits.
